Sloan and the Board of Trustees approved a 12-year vision document entitled “The Ten Pillars – Faith and Reason in a Great City” in 2008. This plan was created to allow the university to “fulfill their responsibility for the renewal Christian Higher Education.”

Sloan was born in Coleman Texas and grew up near Abilene Texas. His B.A. was from Baylor University in 1970. He received his B.A. from Baylor University in 1970 and his M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary, in 1973. He received his D.Th. (Doktor der Theologie) degree from the University of Basel in 1978 after completing post-graduate research at Bristol. Sloan was an adjunct professor at Hardin-Simmons University, as well as on the faculty of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1983 Sloan joined Baylor University’s Department of Religion faculty. He would later become the founding dean of George W. Truett Theological Seminary. In 1995, he succeeded Herbert H. Reynolds to the presidency of the university.
Sloan presented a 42-page plan in 2002 titled “Baylor 2012”, which detailed his strategy to transform Baylor into a national university. It would have Ph.D programs and research professors and be able “to enter the top tier American universities while reaffirming, deepening, and enhancing its distinctive Christian mission.” Twelve imperatives were included in his plan that Sloan said was necessary for Baylor to achieve its Vision. Sloan was narrowly defeated in a 2004 election to remove him from office. He also made controversial financial moves that led to Sloan’s resignation in 2005. Sloan serves on the Board of Directors for the Houston Symphony and the Greater Houston Partnership in addition to leadership roles on the boards of Memorial Hermann Healthcare Systems – Community Relations, Houston Christian High School, Market Place Chaplains USA, and Orphan Outreach. He is also the publisher of the academic journal, The City. Sloan published his first young adult fantasy book in 2016 and its sequel in February 2017.
