Marta Xargay is a Spanish former professional basketball player who represented, as a shooting guard/point guard, Uni Girona CB (2005-2009, 2020) and CB Avenida (2009-2015) in Spain; Phoenix Mercury (2015-2016) in the United States; USK Praha (2015-2018) in the Czech Republic; and WBC Dynamo Kursk (2018-2019) in Russia. With CB Avenida, Marta won the EuroLeague Women (the pre-eminent league in Europe for women’s basketball clubs) title in the 2010-11 season – the club’s first such title in history. At the international level, representing Spain, she clinched the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. It was Spain’s 1st-ever medal in the women’s basketball event of the Olympic Games. With Spain, Marta also won the ‘Silver’ medal in the 2014 edition and the ‘Bronze’ medal in the 2018 edition of the FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basketball) Women’s Basketball World Cup. These were Spain’s 2nd and 3rd medals, respectively, in the prestigious tournament – the first was a ‘Bronze’ medal in 2010. Marta announced her retirement from the sport in July 2021.

Marta’s youth career started in 1996 when, as a 5-year-old, she joined a local club called C.E. Vedruna. In 2003, she was included in the youth academy of a club called C.E.S.E.T. In 2005, she joined the professional women’s basketball club Uni Girona CB at the youth tier and soon progressed to the club’s senior team.
Representing Spain, at the youth tier, she won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2006 edition of the FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship. FIBA Europe is the administrative body for basketball in Europe.
Marta also clinched the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2007 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship, the 2009 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship, the 2009 FIBA Under-19 World Championship, and the 2010 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship.
She was adjudged the ‘MVP’ (Most Valuable Player) of the 2009 FIBA Under-19 World Championship. Spain’s ‘Silver’ medal in the competition was the country’s first-ever medal in the tournament’s history.
With CB Avenida, Marta won the Liga Femenina de Baloncesto (the highest level of league competition for women’s basketball in Spain) in 2011 and 2013. The victory in 2013 was the club’s 3rd such and made it the then joint 6th-most successful team in the competition.
She also won the Copa de la Reina de Baloncesto (the premier domestic knockout competition for Spanish women’s basketball teams) in 2012, 2014, and 2015 with CB Avenida. The victory in 2015 was the club’s 5th such and made it the then 4th-most successful team in the competition.
Representing Spain, Marta won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2013, 2017, and 2019 editions of EuroBasket Women, a biennial international women’s basketball competition held between the women’s national teams of members of FIBA Europe.
The victory in 2019 was Spain’s 4th such and made the country the then 2nd-most successful team in the competition. She was also a part of the Spanish squads that secured the ‘Bronze’ medal at the 2015 edition of the tournament and finished in 9th place in 2011.
With USK Praha, Marta won the Czech Women’s Basketball League (the highest level of league competition for women’s basketball in the Czech Republic) title for 3 years in a row (2016-2018). The 2018 title was the club’s record-extending 12th such and their 8th in a row.
