Early Life

Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor was born in Lomé, Togo, on February 26, 1984, and raised in an apartment without electricity or bathrooms. To shower, his family would go to the beach. He spent most of his youth attending the Sporting Club de Lomé and playing for OC Agaza. Then scouts from Metz took notice of him and brought him to France in 1999. In 2001, he made his Ligue 1 debut.

Soccer Career

After a season in Ligue 2 in which he scored 13 goals in 34 matches, Emmanuel Adebayor moved on. From 2003 to 2006, he played for Monaco. During that time, he helped Monaco reach the 2004 UEFA Champions League Final. In 2006, he signed on with Arsenal where he was nicknamed "Baby Kanu" by the club's manager for his resemblance to player Nwankwo Kanu. Adebayor signed a five-year deal with Manchester City in 2009 before being loaned out to Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur. He signed permanently with Hotspur in 2012.

Adebayor has also played internationally for Togo. He helped lead the club to their only appearance at the World Cup in 2006. But in 2010, the team's bus came under gunfire when they were headed to the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, and Emmanuel retired from national team duty. He returned to Togo for the 2013 African Cup of Nations and helped the club qualify for the quarter-finals. He was named the Togo Footballer of the Year from 2005 to 2008 and African Footballer of the Year in 2008.
