Shady/Aftermath Records lost perhaps its biggest star this week. According to reports, 50 Cent has decided to leave his longtime record label, Universal Music Group’s Interscope Records, and Eminem’s imprint, Shady/Aftermath. The news comes as no surprise to many as 50 has been battling with the label for years. It seems as if the fading hip-hop star has finally had enough.
50 Cent has chosen to sign with Caroline, the independent label at Capital Music Group. Capital is one of the many labels that make up Universal Music Group. It marks a big change in the career of the hip hop star who has seen his commercial success fade terribly over the past few years.
With Eminem as his mentor, 50 burst onto the scene in 2003 with his ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’ album. The record was an instant success and ended up selling over 6 million copies. His second album ‘The Massacre’ dropped in 2005 and was nearly as successful. Unfortunately for 50, his other albums turned out to be far less successful.
It’s an interesting turn in the career for Curtis Jackson who also has a plethora of business ventures and investments. There is no ill-will between 50 and Eminem. Eminem has gone on record wishing 50 success in whatever venture he pursues. There has been no news of any forthcoming albums from him as of now.
